About SureCare

Established in 1994, SureCare is a domiciliary care service that offers professional, personal care across a spectrum of ages and needs, from companionship and everyday home care support to assisting those with complex needs requiring 24-hour attention. Services range from live-in care, respite care, sleepovers and household management. Services can be tailored to the individual needs of clients and can be adapted to any change in circumstances.

“We are committed to looking after people in all stages of life’s journey, from babies and young children to the elderly, as well as those with varying disabilities,” says SureCare.

SureCare also offers adult social care as a key part of its business, particularly assisting those with physical disabilities or learning difficulties. A range of childcare services is another available aspect of the business, from enabling parents with the daily needs of childcare to providing temporary mobile crèche services for special events like conferences or weddings.

SureCare is fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and all staff are subject to enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. This vetting ensures that SureCare clients receive only the best quality care delivered to the highest possible standards. SureCare is also an associate member of the British Franchise Association.

Since its founding, SureCare has expanded, with 52 franchises and branches across the country. “We would like to cover the map of England and Wales with SureCare franchises to ensure everyone is able to access the highest standard of care and home services,” says managing director Gary Farrer.

How does the SureCare franchise work?

In recent years, the government and healthcare experts have been putting more emphasis on homecare and supported living within the home. According to CarersUK, there are 6.5m carers in the UK — 1 in every 8 people — and over a million people care for more than one person. Over 3m people juggle care with a full-time occupation, and in many cases the difficulties this imposes has lead to carers having to give up work.

Caring for the elderly — the greater part of the UK’s homecare market value — is a growing issue. The Office of National Statistics has predicted that the number of people aged 85 or over will double from the 1.6m figure of 2016 to 3.2m by mid-2041.

Demand for care services has already reached a record level and is expected to remain high in the future. Expenditure on domiciliary care is currently around £5bn-per-annum, most through local authorities, with some self-funded and, increasingly, funding coming from the NHS. 96 per cent of home care services funded by local authorities are supplied by independent or voluntary providers — a figure that has increased from 81 per cent in a period of only six years between 2008-14.

SureCare uses bespoke software to make sure that each franchise owner is offered an exclusive territory divided in line with local authority boundaries, which allows them to provide the franchisee with detailed demographic information. Each territory is large enough to support a growing business, which SureCare will assist with through its own marketing and PR campaigns.

What kind of person is SureCare looking for?

“We want to hear from people who may be interested in becoming a full franchisee, but also from those who like the idea of becoming their own boss, but can only afford the budget of a micro franchise,” says Gary Farrer, managing director.

What support and training does SureCare offer?

According to Gary, about half of SureCare’s franchisee’s come from a care background. “We are able to provide the intensive support, training and guidance all our new franchisees require,” he explains.

Training and support will be given throughout the term of the franchise so that the franchisee and their management staff are well equipped to get started as soon as possible and run as smoothly as possible. With this latter in mind, once the franchise is up and running, there is an ongoing support programme — whether you need to train new staff or just need a quick refresher.

SureCare’s business development managers will guide you through the setup and guide you through various options — including where to locate your business premises, setting up an office, implementing your business plan, and strategies for marketing and future growth and development.

Your business manager will also be able to help with workplace health, safety and welfare regulations, as well as employment contracts, the National Minimum Wage and workplace pensions to make sure that your business complies with regulations.

Both franchise owners and their staff will be trained through SureCare’s intensive programme to ensure that the operation is efficient and effective at bringing the best possible care to customers. To make sure your franchise is always operating at its optimal level, additional training is always available to keep your business up to date with new developments.

What post-launch support does SureCare offer?

SureCare’s ongoing mentoring and support will also be available for assistance and advice on finance and budgeting, sales and marketing and specialist recruitment. SureCare Recruitment specialises in recruitment for the care industry. The team performs DBS checks on all applicants and offer extensive training to ensure that each recruit can offer the best quality service required by your clients and your business.

Franchise owners will benefit from SureCare’s nationally recognised and reputable brand for care services. They will also be able to take advantage of central marketing support, which includes marketing literature, merchandising materials, public relations, business stationery, and many other items often beyond the reach of a start-up business that will help you quickly develop a local presence in the community. SureCare franchises have a space on the SureCare website to showcase specific content and have the opportunity to share news with the rest of the SureCare network.

What other services does SureCare offer?

As well as the domiciliary care on which the SureCare brand built its reputation, as a franchisee, you will be able to offer various care services to your community to see them through all stages of their lives. Over the past 25 years, SureCare has taken on board feedback and suggestions from customers to help improve its levels of service.

SureCare strives to recruit care workers who can work flexibly so that they can provide short-term care, such as respite care or holiday cover. In some cases, the client may require a care companion for their own holiday.

A lot of feedback was received about domestic jobs around the house — and SureCare launched a secondary micro-franchise, SureCare Local, in 2014 in order to provide domestic services as required, including cleaning, gardening, household DIY and even babysitting and nannying. All babysitters and childcare specialists are DBS checked.

What are the benefits of franchising with SureCare?

With the country in a period of social and economic change, and with a growing population of over 65’s, this is the perfect time to start and run your own business in the care sector with the backing of a respected brand and support materials. There has been a marked increase in demand for homecare services over the past decade and this is expected to continue.

“Operating under the SureCare brand, your business can reap the benefits of our structured support system to aid your future growth, development and compliance of your services,” says SureCare. “Our business development managers will help to support you in various ways — for example finance, sales and marketing campaigns and developing innovative ways to grow your business.”

What are the potential earnings?

A SureCare franchise can prove to be a very profitable business model, according to SureCare: “With a number of franchise owners reporting annual turnover levels in excess of £1m with substantial profits. We aim for new franchisee to break even within nine months of operation and would expect an established office to achieve gross profits of 40 per cent and net profits of between 15-20 per cent.”

What are SureCare’s terms of agreement and renewal?

SureCare has a £36,000 (plus VAT) franchise fee and charges an ongoing 5 per cent (plus VAT) service charge. The brand estimates an initial investment of £70,000-£90,000 — which includes the franchise fee as well as working capital. The company states: “Once we have jointly established the true capital requirement we can then discuss how this capital is raised and deployed. Whatever that amount may be, you will need access to 30 per cent of that amount as direct cash from your own resources, the balance you can raise from our selection of financial partners.”

The length of a SureCare franchise term is 10 years.

How in-demand are homecare suppliers right now?

The homecare sector is growing to meet increasing demand and figures from the Institute of Fiscal Studies shows that the government spent £21.2bn on adult social care in 2016-17, with approximately half of this spent on individuals aged 65 or over. While spending on social care has fallen in the past decade, local councils were given the power in 2015 to increase council tax by 2 per cent per year (raised to 3 per cent in 2017) to raise greater funds for social care. It is expected that the 3 per cent rise will raise £1.2bn for social care by 2019/20.

Franchisees with SureCare, as a nationally recognised and well-established brand within the care sector, are in a good position to benefit from this increase in funding. They will also benefit from the ability to tap into multiple revenue streams — expanding into childcare and supporting those with other home-based demands.
