With the new year now in full swing, many people are taking the fresh start as a good opportunity to get fit and healthy.

Over the last few years, particularly during the recession, there has been an increased focus on looking after yourself. At the Direct Selling Association we have seen this trend take off, with an 18-fold growth in our health and wellness sector from 2007 to 2013.

LARGEST SECTOR
The revenue gained from this sector has increased from 2.2 per cent in 2007 to 39 per cent in the last year, making it a great sector to get involved in as its popularity continues to grow.

The sector includes supplements, vitamins, nutrition, weight management, natural skincare, organic health and beauty, aromatherapy and healthy living products and, for the first time, is now the largest sector in direct selling in the UK.

As direct selling embraces the public’s desire for a healthier lifestyle, for many people it has become a convenient way of buying their wellness products. Two new companies became full DSA members in 2013 - nutritional company USANA and Young Living, which specialises in essential oils.

HOMEWORKING
Many direct sellers in the wellness sector entered the industry to get healthy and, as a result, discovered the benefits of direct selling - working from home, flexible working and the opportunity to work for yourself around other commitments.
