People who have triumphed against the odds to set up a small business are to be recognised in a unique awards scheme to by launched on March 12.

Sponsored by Barclays and backed by the Government, The Barclays Trading Places Awards - now in their third year - aim to recognise men and women from all over the UK who have overcome various barriers and battled against adversity to positively change their lives by setting up in business.

The awards, also supported by the Prince’s Trust, DTI and Jobcentre Plus, are open to sole traders and smaller businesses less than three years old that are still on the first rungs of the commercial ladder. They must have been trading for a minimum of three months and have an annual turnover of less than £1 million.

Entries will be judged on how enterprising individuals have overcome personal challenges and obstacles to set up on their own.  The 10 national finalists will attend a glittering gala awards dinner in London in September, where the top business will be announced. Prizes will be supplied by Barclays and Thomson Local Directories.

Call 020 8673 2020 for a nomination form or visit www.barclays.co.uk/tradingplaces. Closing date for entries is May 11.
