The first centre was opened in 1989 by David Corbett and Frank Eliel in Norwich, delivering cutting edge signage solutions to customers. Founded with the specific aim of becoming a franchise, after piloting operations for three years the founders opened the first franchised centre in 1992 in Ipswich, closely followed by another in Grimsby.
There are now 65 Signs Express franchisees in the UK and Ireland.
Signs Express predominately trades business-to-business and offers two types of franchising opportunities:
• Greenfield: For those who are looking to make their own mark on a business and start from scratch for not only financial gain, but also personal satisfaction.
• Resales: For people who want to continue progressing an already successful operation.

Territories are divided based on their geographical area and number of businesses within that region. Territories without an existing franchise centre in the UK and Ireland are called greenfield sites and among them are premium opportunities, which includes high conurbations in prime locations such as Edinburgh, Canterbury, London, and Bradford.
Signs Express is currently investing £30,000 into all start-ups. By reinvesting your franchise fee and adding a further £10,000 investment, the company is ensuring you hit the ground running from day one.
Your initial investment covers everything you need to set up and run your business. In addition, each month you’ll contribute 1.5 per cent of your turnover towards a national promotional fund.
This fund is used specifically for lead generation and brand development activities - making sure Signs Express is front of mind for potential customers.
Franchisees are also subject to a management service charge levy of 7.5 per cent of turnover, which covers dedicated support, licencing and use of the brand.
Currently, Signs Express has 65 centres throughout the UK and Ireland.
The typical investment cost for new locations is:
£40,000-£45,000 liquid capital.
£60,000-£70,000 bank loan.
Opportunities are available in the south east, Scotland and Midlands in locations such as Crawley, Perth, Brighton and Croydon.
Signs Express also has resale opportunities in Buckinghamshire, Lancaster, Liverpool and Wirral and Harrogate.

The franchise support centre of more than 20 staff is based in Norwich.

Every new franchisee attends a comprehensive training course held at the franchise support centre, where they will meet the support team and learn all the aspects of the business.
