For jet-setter Scott MacRae, Right at Home offered a career solution to plug the gap and fulfil his own career ambition
Scott MacRae, previously sales director for a Northern European company, was used to waking up in a different hotel each morning.
But it wasn’t long before the glamour wore off and he found himself longing to work closer to home.
Missing out
“I was responsible for $100 million turnover and overseeing staff in the UK, Scandinavia and Benelux, so wasn’t home very much,” Scott recalls.
“I realised I was missing out on seeing my children grow up, which wasn’t how I envisioned my life. It was time to make some changes.”
Having been in one career for over 25 years, Scott knew his strengths, but took the time to discover his options.
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do beyond a total turnaround,” Scott says. “I completed a psychometric test, which highlighted the careers suitable for me. Franchising was one of the top, so I started researching this more.”
Attending one of the British Franchise Association franchise shows, Scott was introduced to Right at Home.
“I connected with Right at Home’s ethos, but wasn’t sure I could actually make the leap into care,” he confesses. “It was the draw of managing director Ken Deary, who struck me as one of the most credible men I have met, having personal experience in both franchising and care.
“This led me to take a closer look at the opportunity they presented and I liked the fact I could make a difference in the community.
Combining these factors with the quality assurance of an award winning business model, my concerns were put to bed.
“After years of flying around the world, it was time to root myself and offer something back to the community. I realised what Right at Home was offering was more than a business.”
While Scott is capable of managing people, having experienced huge success with a global company, he recognised there were gaps in his knowledge.
“The support of Right at Home’s head office, based on years of experience, was invaluable,” he says. “Add this to the collaboration of the franchisee network and I never felt I was building my business alone.
“I struggled a little at first, but the head office training, systems and tools helped immensely. We’ve built an excellent reputation and by offering above average wages we attract high quality staff offering excellent homecare.
“We are determined to be the UK’s number one homecare business.”
Work-life balance
Scott has found the perfect work-life balance with Right at Home.
“I finally feel as though I’m in control of my own life,” he says. “I’d spent years working for someone else, so it feels good to put my energy into my own successful business. I should have done it sooner.
“As a management franchisee, I don’t have to be there all the time. My business runs for me, freeing me to devote my time where I want - with family. It is a complete turnaround from the high flying, globetrotting career I walked away from. But I’m less stressed and much prefer sleeping in the same bed each night.”
