What are my responsibilities as a franchisee?
Many franchisors would sum up the answer to this in three words - follow the system. But let’s examine what that means in more detail. The franchisee’s responsibilities will be spelled out in the appropriate clauses of the franchise agreement. In essence, their role is to operate the system that is the subject of the franchise, at their premises or on their territory, to the standards laid down in the operations manual. What this means in practice is that the franchisee is responsible for running their branch of the business on a day-to-day basis and taking care of all the inter-action between themselves, their staff and their customers. What they are not responsible for is deciding what will be sold, how it will be marketed and what colours and designs to use - that is all decided by the franchisor and is part of the system which the franchisee is responsible for operating. In addition to their responsibilities to the franchisor, franchisees are also responsible to their fellow franchisees, and to the network as a whole, to uphold the standards and build the reputation of the brand.
