About HITIO Gym

HITIO Gym was founded in Norway in 1998 by entrepreneurs Per Christian Pedersen and Fredrik Bjertnaes.

Combining a traditional gym and studio with combat sports training, it’s become one of the largest fitness chains in Norway, with 32 clubs nationwide.

HITIO Gym’s distinctive format aims to bring people together through physical activity by targeting a large customer base, including families with children, who can exercise at the same time, thanks to the brand’s offering.

This is underpinned by the business’ martial arts-focused group classes, which includes boxing, taekwondo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Thai boxing and HITIO Tiger, a programme for
children aged between five and seven that helps to develop focus, concentration, discipline and self confidence through fun and motivating training.

The company’s mission is to create a global brand that has over 400 gyms open by the end of 2023.

HITIO Gym recruited its first UK franchisee in February 2019. The south London club is owned by BGB Fitness, an investment group specialising in fitness facilities that has over 30 years’ combined experience in the health and fitness and property sectors.

Matthew Blair, director of BGB Fitness, says: “We explored franchised fitness solutions in the past, but until now didn’t find anything as unique as HITIO.

“The concept addresses a gap in the market by targeting both adults and children. This is something we feel very strongly about and with child obesity an ever increasing concern for the UK, HITIO gyms are a fantastic way of engaging families in health and fitness by providing a sense of community that is often missing from franchised gyms.”

The gym will be equipped by Matrix Fitness, a subsidiary brand of Johnson Health Tech, as part of an exclusive partnership that has already seen all 32 of HITIO Gym’s Norwegian sites install Matrix strength and cardio equipment.

How does the HITIO Gym franchise model work?

A HITIO Gym franchisee assumes the role of a full-time gym manager. Each franchise has 35 staffed opening hours per week based around when classes are running to ensure a safe environment for families using the facility.

Alongside the support of one-two members of employed staff, HITIO Gym advises that franchisees enlist the services of one personal trainer/martial arts specialist for every 100 members.

Single-site franchisees can progress to become master franchisees, who oversee a whole region or country, growing their own network by recruiting, training and supporting other franchisees.

What locations or territories is HITIO Gym looking to operate in?

The company has opportunities throughout the UK and Europe for master and single-site franchises.

How much does a HITIO Gym franchise cost?

The total investment for a HITIO Gym franchise ranges from between £138,000-£231,600. £49,500-£90,000 is for the franchise fee, prepayment leasing facilities, marketing support, furniture and fixtures, office equipment and supplies and an initial supply of retail and training items.

A further £88,500-£141,600 is required for the purchase of training equipment.

Investment levels for this franchise depends on a number of factors, including the size and condition of the premises and the amount of training equipment required.

Does HITIO Gym charge franchisees any ongoing fees?

Yes. The company’s ongoing fees are charged at eight per cent of turnover.

Why is HITIO Gym a good investment?

While this growing sector, which has been valued at £4.9bn annually in the UK, is becoming increasingly competitive, HITIO Gym’s family-oriented approach to fitness gives
it a unique selling proposition and a large potential customer base.

The brand is also capitalising on the increased participation in combat sports in mainstream fitness.

According to HITIO Gym, franchisees only need relatively few members to become profitable.

In addition, the company says its proven business model enables franchisees to be cash flow positive within a few months of trading and provides substantial reoccurring income within 12 months, as well as the work/life balance many of us crave.

What training and support do HITIO Gym franchisees receive?

All HITIO Gym franchisees, along with their senior members of staff and instructors, complete a comprehensive training programme in Norway to learn step by step how to run a
successful club.

Franchisees are assisted in the search for suitable premises by the franchisor, which uses the geographic information system Mango to help identify potential sites based on extensive data and insights.

On top of this, franchisees are given access to a range of expert webinars and online resources. They also receive continual support from HITIO Gym’s central teams, business reviews twice a year to ensure they are progressing in line with their objectives and financial goals and proven marketing packages to help promote their businesses.

What are the HITIO Gym franchise’s terms of agreement and renewal?

The initial franchise agreement lasts for five years. Franchisees have the option to renew for a further five years following this time.
