About Magicman

Magicman supplies a range of services, from restoration and hard surface repairs to stone and glass polishing, colour matching, door, window and stone repairs. Magicman works on all kinds of repairs from domestic to office, hotels ships and arenas. The company was also the official supplier of specialist repair services to the London 2012 Olympic Games, as well as other notable projects including work for Ericsson’s HQ in Stockholm, Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals, Kensington Palace Gardens, Heathrow’s terminals 5 and 2, the Imperial War Museum, the O2 Arena and Arsenal Emirates Stadium.

The Magicman ‘engineered solutions’ are of the highest quality, and Magicman technicians are trained to deliver high quality repairs that are almost undetectable to doors, floors, worktops, baths, shower trays, tiles, window frames and sills, furniture and much more. Magicman can rectify chips, dents, scratches, burns and holes in wood, stone, marble, uPVC, veneers, laminates, granite, ceramic tiles, stainless steel and even glass.

The resulting repairs are of an exceptionally high standard with a finish that is virtually as good as new, which means that customers avoid the expensive alternative of replacement and the time and effort of ordering replacement items and having them delivered and installed.

Magicman is an approved supplier to a large number of national companies, particularly in the construction, facilities management, insurance and marine sectors.

It is a nationwide service with directly-employed technicians available to work alone or in teams across Great Britain, with even greater numbers concentrated around London and the South East, Birmingham and the Midlands, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and the North.

What is the background of the Magicman franchise and brand?

Mark Henderson, owner and CEO of the popular surface restoration company, set up the business after 15 years as a marine engineer in the Royal Navy. He developed a range of innovative techniques for repairing damage, such as scratches and chips in hard surfaces, and started working as a sole trader offering surface repair and restoration in 1993.

The company has been so successful, today employing a staff of almost 100, that it believes Magicman has become something of a generonym – a brand so well known that it is used as a generic term for an industry.

Magicman’s sister company, Magicman Global Licensing, was incorporated in January 2014 with the purpose of extending the Magicman service. Hand-picked local operators are now working in the UK and Northern Ireland and overseas.

Magicman is also an associate member of the British Franchise Association (BFA).

Magicman is widely accredited and has certificates for both quality of work and safety management, including ISO 9001 accreditation from UKAS for quality management systems; ISO 14001 for its environmental management system; and BH OHAS 18001 for its occupational health and safety management. Magicman is also part of the Safemark NHBC Health & Safety Competence Assessment Scheme, the SafeContractor, and Worksafe Contractor schemes.

What services does the Magicman franchise provide?

Owning a Magicman franchise means that franchisees will have access to state-of-the-art technology to execute a range of specialist services to both residential and commercial clients. The MagicMan repair technology presents franchisees with a distinct competitive advantage and with a growing market demand, the potential to build a thriving and profitable service business is considerable.

With a fully-equipped van, franchisees of Magicman visit homes, businesses, hotels, building sites, and other varied locations to undertake damage repairs in situ.

Enquiries are dealt with by our customer service centre and dispatched to franchisees, who liaise with customers to schedule site visits. Custom-designed software allows franchisees to efficiently handle administration and to organise their business development activity.

Magicman can also source and apply specialist coatings such as anti-graffiti, fire retardant or other specific protective requirements.

How does the Magicman franchise model work?

With households under increasing pressure to reduce costs, the demand for a cost-efficient repair and resurfacing solutions provided by Magicman is inevitably growing. The ability to repair a damaged surface or fitting on-site is attractive compared to the cost and inconvenience of replacement.

There are business opportunities to expand a base of loyal customers into a wide range of areas, including domestic householders, builders, tradesmen, utility and insurance companies, kitchen and bathroom installers, letting agents, facilities management companies, transportation (rail, marine, airlines, coach) and hotels, guest houses, clubs and pubs.

The franchise operation was established in 2015, seeking to build on Magicman’s existing reputation for providing innovative repair solutions of excellent quality. Each franchise offers a defined territory to operate in with a minimum of 75,000 households, a comprehensive training course, all necessary IT training, stationary, workwear and documentation.

What support and training does the Magicman franchise offer?

Magicman holds regular Discovery Days at its Brighton headquarters where potential franchisees can learn more about the business, view its innovative technology and techniques, and receive full details about how the franchise works.

Those who take up the Magicman franchise will be given five weeks training at the custom-made training academy, which opened in 2016. It is an intensive course that seeks to ensure franchisees walk away with a high level of technical competence and will be fully equipped with administrative and business development capability. The course is conducted at our training academy in Brighton, and comprising modules in the classroom, in the field and online.

The course offers full tuition in surface repair and restoration, health and safety procedures, handling service visits, customer liaison and invoicing, managing finances and how to use Magicman’s ‘Magician’ management system, giving estimates, how to order materials and manage suppliers, and training in effective customer service techniques.

Once trained, the franchisee undertakes a programme of local marketing initiatives, with support from the Magicman Head Office team. According to Magicman, when the initial training finishes is when the support really begins. The Magicman Customer Service Centre will book and schedule jobs on behalf of the franchisee, conduct local marketing and social media campaigns, a bespoke website, offer mentoring, regular business reviews and periodic franchisee meetings and conferences.

Their training was once described in an ISOQAR audit as “exemplary”.

The Magicman franchisee will be supplied with a vehicle fully stocked with tools and materials. They will be partnered with an experienced technician for a week and then have the full support from technical managers. After a couple of years, there is an option to return for further training in specialised areas, such as glass and stone polishing, or to work overseas on cruise ships and international building projects with the long-serving and highly experienced teams who will help them develop their skills even further.

Are there opportunities to grow your workforce when operating a Magicman franchise?

As a Magicman franchisee, you’ll run your own business working in a defined territory known as an Area of Prime Responsibility (APR), where you will grow your business by networking, advertising and leafleting. You will also receive further work from Magicman’s national account customers, including construction companies, insurers, utilities and retailers.

As the business builds, you will have the opportunity to either expand your team of technicians, adding extra vans and establishing a small administration team or to sell part of the APR so that the work volume is sufficient to continue supporting a single van business.

In addition, applications are being invited from franchisees interested in master license rights in overseas markets.

What are the likely returns on my investment in a Magicman franchise?

Magicman will help you build your business, which should provide you with the financial freedom you desire and allow you to take control of your future. According to Magicman, by following the Magicman system, and working hard, the rewards are there for the taking.

The initial franchise fee (£19,950, plus VAT) provides you with a territory to operate in, full training, launch marketing, IT system access, stationary, work wear and a full tools and equipment package. You will additionally need to acquire a transit-size van, which can be bought outright or supplied on a contract hire or finance lease basis.

You may additionally require working capital; Magicman generally advises that prospective franchisees have a working capital fund sufficient to cover four months’ of living expenses. According to the brand, for the year April 2017 - March 2018, 31 per cent of Magicman’s technicians earned £20-25,000; 32 per cent earned £25-30K; 24 per cent were on £30-35K; 6 per cent on £35-40; and the last 7 per cent earned over £40,000-per-annum gross.

What is Magicman looking for in its franchisees?

Magicman notes that setting up a business requires an abundance of energy and enthusiasm, twinned with a deep desire to want to succeed. While Magicman will train and support its franchisees, you’ll need the key requisite skills and attributes to make a success of your business.

To be a Magicman partner is imperative that you are a practical person who is in good health. You will have an understanding on how a business works, as you should also possess good communication and mathematical skills, and be comfortable operating standard computer systems.

What are Magicman franchise’s terms of agreement and renewal?

A Magicman franchise runs for five years with an option to renew for further five year periods.

How in-demand are flooring repair services right now?

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) have estimated that householders spent 5 per cent of their housing expenditure on repairs and maintenance in 2013, the figure little changed from the previous two years, although this includes such larger ticket expenses like decorating. A rule of thumb followed by many is to set aside 1-2 per cent of the value of their house to cover maintenance expenses each year.

Household expenditure in financial year ending 2017, adjusted for inflation, has not been so high since 2006 According to the ONS’s latest Family Spending report, household spending has exceeded pre-economic downturn levels for the first time.
