Can I own more than one franchise?
Generally speaking, franchisors prefer franchisees to have just one outlet or territory, at least to start with, and to concentrate all their efforts on building that business. Once you have proven that you can successfully operate one outlet, your franchisor may be willing to consider allowing you to open another outlet or take on another territory. That covers multiple units within the same network, but what about owning one outlet for each of two, or more, franchisors? This is far more common in the USA and Australia, for example, than it is in the UK, although even here it is not unknown for an experienced food service operator to be a franchisee of, say, a pizza, burger and chicken franchise, particularly if they are all based around a food court. In those cases, however, it is likely that the franchisee will be a company with an experienced management team rather than an individual. Other opportunities for multifranchise ownership occur when two separate franchised businesses can get synergy from operating in the same premises. The franchisee typically owns or leases the premises and acquires two, or more, franchises to put in them.
