What are the characteristics of a franchiseable business?
The main characteristic of a franchiseable business is a business format that can be easily replicated. As you may expect, not all businesses are franchiseable and although there are numerous features of a franchiseable business, the key characteristics include:
1. The business should have a proven track record, including a well-known name in the market place.
2. An experienced management team.
3. Systems, procedures, expertise, skill and know-how of the business that are capable of being transferred relatively easily to others, through training and following an operations manual. These are just some of the key characteristics, but there are others, such as making sure that you have a trading name or style that can be protected. Whilst not a core characteristic, the franchise business should ideally be affordable for potential franchisees, since if the franchise is very expensive there is likely to be fewer people who can afford to invest in the business. If you are considering franchising your business there are numerous franchise consultants who should be able to give you an independent assessment of whether your business is franchiseable. Details of franchise consultants can be obtained from the British Franchise Association.
