What qualities must a good franchisee possess?
The franchisee’s role is to operate the business in accordance with the system that has been proven by the franchisor. He or she should be capable of being trained to operate that system, and they should have whatever knowledge, skills and attitudes are required to do so. There are certain qualities that are evident in all successful franchisees. Firstly, they need to be compliant, rather than entrepreneurial, in order to follow the system without wanting to change it. They will usually need sales ability in order to get and keep customers and be able to manage and motivate staff. Then they will need the financial acumen to keep control of the business and understand its performance. In any business someone has to get the customers, service their needs and administer the whole thing. In the early days, the franchisee has to do all three - and that is a big ask. Most franchisors will look for evidence of success in the potential franchisee’s previous career, because it is not the franchisor’s responsibility to make someone successful. The ability to succeed, and the inner strength that goes with it, is a prerequisite for a good franchisee.
