Separated from the Scottish mainland by the Pentland Firth, this archipelago consists of around 70 islands, 20 of which are inhabited. Orkney’s economy is based on agriculture, fishing, tourism, retail, public services and oil transportation. In 2019 it was rated as the best place to live in the UK, according to the Halifax Quality of Life survey. Orkney has significant wind and marine energy resources, currently generating over 100 per cent of its net power from renewable energy sources such as wind turbines.
