Education Franchise Opportunities

The UK’s growing appetite for educational enrichment makes education franchises a promising investment. Whether it’s tutoring, arts, STEM or something else, there are plenty of opportunities to tap into this thriving sector.

With a proven business model and the potential for strong returns, an education franchise offers an exciting way to make a meaningful impact while building a successful business. Here’s what you need to know before getting started.

Education Franchise Opportunities

    What is an education franchise?

Whether teaching children or supporting adult learners, the variety of education franchises on offer is vast. From after-school programmes, weekend sports camps and daytime skills training to Saturday morning coding sessions, cookery courses and first aid, the spectrum is richly diverse.

It’s dynamic too. Investor options range from long-established formats to new concepts drawing on trending interests.

There’s something incredibly vibrant, energetic and positive about the education franchise arena. In part, it's because there’s so much variety. But it's also because, by its very nature, it encompasses all aspects of personal enrichment and growth.

From early years and primary school to teenagers and adults, there is enormous scope to develop an education franchise that helps people develop new pursuits, outside of school hours and away from traditional academic environments.

    Education franchise categories

Tutoring & supplementary education: Franchises offering academic support outside the classroom, typically in subjects such as English, maths and science. It’s about improving school performance, building confidence and helping children reach their full potential.

Early childhood education: Franchises targeting children aged 0–5, providing programmes that nurture foundational skills through play-based learning, social interaction and early literacy and numeracy development.

STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths): Franchises delivering engaging, hands-on learning experiences to children in areas like coding, engineering and science experiments. Designed to build future-ready skills and inspire curiosity.

Language schools: Franchises specialising in language acquisition for all ages – from young children to adults. Programmes typically include popular languages such as French, Spanish and Mandarin.

Adult education: Franchises offering flexible learning options for adults looking to acquire new skills, retrain or pursue hobbies and personal development. Courses may include business skills, arts, IT, vocational training or paediatric first aid training.

Creative & enrichment education: Franchises that develop children’s creativity, confidence and physical wellbeing through extracurricular activities such as art, music, drama, dance, sport and swimming. Designed to support holistic child development and self-expression.

    Why start an education franchise?

In the UK, franchised businesses play a major part in making extracurricular learning possible. There are thousands of well-thought-out education and learning programmes out there to explore.

Education franchises offer sustainable business opportunities with potential for excellent returns, given that they can be scaled up through territorial expansion. It’s also possible to generate additional revenue beyond just tuition fees.

Alternatively, it's possible to run an education franchise as more of a lifestyle-orientated business, giving you the flexibility to work around family life and other commitments such as a full or part-time job.

8 reasons to choose an education franchise

    • Proven success models: Trusted franchises like Kumon and Mathnasium offer tried-and-tested learning frameworks with a global track record of results. This gives franchisees a head start with an established methodology.
    • Strong enrolment drives sustainability: High enrolment and repeat sign-ups are critical to both short-term growth and long-term success. Many education franchises boast strong retention thanks to consistent results and happy parents.
    • Rising demand in high-growth areas: The appetite for quality, future-focused learning continues to grow – particularly in areas like STEM, where parents seek enrichment beyond the classroom.
    • Referrals fuel growth: Satisfied families often become your best advocates. Word-of-mouth recommendations remain one of the most powerful and cost-effective marketing tools in this sector.
    • Flexibility to match your strengths: Whether you have a background in education or simply a passion for making a difference, many franchises offer the option to hire subject experts – allowing you to focus on running the business and building a community.
    • Multiple revenue streams: Income isn’t limited to tuition fees – franchisees can generate additional revenue through educational products, resources, workshops and subscription-based learning platforms.
    • Resilient through uncertainty: Education is a needs-based sector that tends to remain stable even in challenging economic times. The rise of online learning has also made it more adaptable, as proven during the Covid pandemic.
    • Purpose-driven enterprise: Owning an education franchise offers more than just a financial return. It's a chance to make a meaningful impact on learners of all ages while building a fulfilling business with long-term potential.

    Do you need experience?

In most cases, whether you're the franchisor or franchisee, there is usually background expertise or a strong personal interest in a particular subject or activity. This runs alongside a desire to improve educational standards and support community wellbeing.

Here we talk to the owner of the UK’s largest beginner art class network of franchises, plus a former ballet dancer turned multiple franchise holder of an international children’s performing arts school.

Education case study: The Seasons Art Class

With over 130 branches across England and Scotland, the Seasons Art Class is the UK’s leading adult amateur art class franchise.

Designed for beginners and improvers alike, this low-cost, high-impact model offers students the joy of creativity and connection in a relaxed, sociable setting.

Each franchise runs 14-week art courses, held once a week, three times a year. Students learn a mix of drawing, oil pastel, watercolour and acrylic painting in daytime classes that attract a friendly, largely retired demographic.

With plans to expand to around 250 branches, the Seasons Art Class isn’t just about art – it’s about community.

    The story behind the canvas

Genevieve Woodford, a practising artist, co-founded the Seasons Art Class with her late partner Mike Curry during the 2009 recession. “I’d just returned from a career break in Australia and saw a gap for beginner art classes,” she says. “Mike had a background in franchising and marketing. Together, we built something unique.”

They successfully tested the concept by running nine branches of their own before launching as a franchise. “We developed teaching videos, training manuals and a complete operational system. We knew it worked – and we knew others could make it work too.”

A franchise that fits your life

One of the biggest attractions of this franchise is its flexibility. Classes run during the day, once a week. This means it fits neatly around family life or other commitments. It’s especially popular among semi-retired or retired franchisees who want a fulfilling business that brings joy to others.

“This is a lifestyle business,” says Genevieve. “You can hire tutors or teach the classes yourself if you’re artistic. Either way, your role is to create a welcoming, enjoyable space where creativity can flourish.”

Franchisees typically work with around 20 students per session – morning and afternoon – from a hired venue of their choice. Genevieve adds: “It could be a sailing club, a village hall, even a function room in a restaurant. It’s all about the light!”

    Not just 'art people'

Interestingly, you don’t need to be arty to run an art class. “In fact, artists sometimes struggle because they want to change the format,” explains Genevieve.

“What matters more is being a people person – someone who values structure, connection and can stick to a proven formula.”

New franchisees receive full training and access to comprehensive support materials, including operations manuals and teaching videos. Help is also available to find venues, source tutors and even coordinate bookings if desired.

How much does this education franchise cost?

To get started, franchisees need an initial investment of £18,995, plus approximately £2,500 for art equipment.

A marketing budget of around £4,500 is also advised for a targeted local leaflet drop and social media campaign. Other essentials include a laptop, printer and insurance.

Most franchisees begin to make a profit after 12-18 months. And once the business is up and running, word of mouth and student loyalty help reduce ongoing marketing costs. On average, 65% of students re-enrol – a strong sign of satisfaction and sustainability.

Art, joy and a sense of purpose

In 2024 alone, 1,000 more students joined classes compared to the previous year. Clearly the model works – and people love it.

“For our students, especially retirees, these classes are about more than painting,” says Genevieve. “It’s a chance to meet new people, try something new, and boost wellbeing. And for franchisees, it’s the chance to build a rewarding business that genuinely enhances lives.”

The Seasons Art Class is built on the belief that creativity is for everyone – and connection is just as important as composition. “We’re looking for friendly, warm people; people like us,” says Genevieve. “If you care about others and want to make a difference, this could be the perfect next chapter.”

Education case study: Stagecoach Performing Arts

Stagecoach Performing Arts is one of the UK’s leading children’s performing arts franchise businesses. It offers four to 18-year-olds the chance to develop confidence, creativity and life skills through singing, dancing and acting.

It runs thousands of schools across the country and internationally. Its commitment to excellence sees it ranking fourth in the 2025 Elite Franchise Top 100.

With strong brand recognition and a supportive franchise network, Stagecoach attracts passionate educators and entrepreneurs across the UK.

One such individual is Kate Davies, principal of Stagecoach Cardiff and Penarth, whose inspiring journey into franchise ownership shows how combining creativity and business can lead to a fulfilling career – both personally and professionally.

From centre stage to centre of the community

Kate Davies has turned a lifelong passion for the performing arts into a thriving business venture. “I started dancing at the age of three,” she says. “I went on to train with both the Northern and Royal Ballet companies. Later, I travelled the world running dance events and competitions with the United Dance Organisation.”

With teaching qualifications under her belt, Kate was already well immersed in the world of Stagecoach before taking the leap into business ownership.

“I’d been teaching at various Stagecoach schools across South Wales when the opportunity came up to buy two existing schools,” she recalls. “There were already 80 kids enrolled, so I knew I could hit the ground running.”

With her husband’s marketing expertise and her own deep experience in the performing arts, the couple purchased the businesses in 2019 – just months before the world was turned upside down by the pandemic.

    Bouncing back and building up

“When lockdown hit, we had to pivot quickly. We kept things going online, and once restrictions lifted, things really took off,” Kate explains. She left her other job to focus solely on growing the franchise – and it paid off.

Today, she oversees six thriving schools across Cardiff and Penarth, with plans to launch at least two more within her territory.

“Success comes down to hard work and determination,” she says. “But if you put in the effort, you’ll see the rewards. Word of mouth has been our most powerful marketing tool. Families hear about the experience we offer, and they want to be part of it.”

With 450 students currently enrolled, Kate remains highly hands-on. “Even though I’m running a business, I know every child by name – and their parents too. I still get involved in the shows, and I’m off to Disneyland Paris with the team soon. It’s part of what makes Stagecoach so special.”

    Support, flexibility and fulfilment

Kate credits the supportive franchise structure as a big part of her success. “The help from head office is brilliant – not just with training and business systems, but in areas like safeguarding and staff wellbeing. There’s even a 24/7 helpline, which really gives peace of mind.”

She’s also found strength in the local franchise network: “The Welsh franchisees are a tight-knit bunch. Even though we each run our own schools, there’s a real sense of community. I never feel like I’m doing this on my own.”

Buying into Stagecoach has been “life-changing,” she says. “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I can work around my family, I earn an excellent income, and I have a real sense of achievement. I’d recommend it to anyone with a passion for the performing arts.”
