While its economy is largely reliant on tourism and farming, Wigtownshire is home to the Bladnoch Distillery, which in 2017 celebrated its 200th anniversary, making it the oldest privately owned Scotch distillery. The county town of Wigtown is known as Scotland’s ‘Book Town’ due to its high concentration of second-hand bookshops and annual book festival. With a population of 13,000, Stranraer is Wigtownshire’s largest town and has a sizeable ferry port.
